After Gastric Bypass - What Comes Next?

Sunday, August 30th, 2009 | Great Sites | Comments Off

What is life like after weight loss surgery? The answer is as different as the people who choose this procedure to help them lose their excess weight. Some of the issues that people face are daunting after gastric bypass, while some changes are truly positive. Let’s take a look at some of the things you might face:

Immediately after surgery, your food intake is almost nil, then gradually you will begin eating solids. The initial fast is necessary to prevent damage to the surgical area. However, fasting after surgery seems to come naturally, since you won’t be feeling very good, anyway. You’ll soon be moved to a liquid diet, and then gradually you’ll be allowed to eat soft foods. You will be totally concentrating on getting well and following your doctor’s instructions at this point, and will probably be under careful supervision. However, you’ll soon be allowed to go home.

The first 2 months after gastric bypass are the toughest as the body and mind become accustomed to the new way of eating. Certain restrictions are still necessary to keep you healthy, and some foods will make you feel quite sick if you do’nt avoid them. However, you will be losing weight so quickly that the restrictions seem worth it, although the adjustments, both mentally and physically, will take some time.

Around 6 months after gastric bypass or lap band surgery, there is a let down. The weight loss is becoming a normal occurrence and the newness is beginning to wear off. Sometimes the urge for sweets is overbearing. You may feel the need to cheat and eat the goodies, but that will lead to an uncomfortable feeling of nausea, diarrhea, cold sweats and rapid heartbeat. Experiencing the dumping syndrome once or twice is usually enough to deter any more attempts at eating forbidden foods.

Around a year into the weight loss, you are becoming pretty comfortable with your new life. You have learned how to eat out with friends and family, and you have more energy and stamina than you have felt in years, maybe decades. However, this is the time when many people let down their guard and go back to eating too much, eating the wrong foods, and regaining some or all of their weight. Even after gastric bypass, you still need to find the inner strength you’ll need to eat right and stay healthy.

Aerobic Training and Aerobic Exercise

Sunday, August 30th, 2009 | Great Sites | Comments Off

The benefits of aerobic training are great. This is howcome about all doctors recommend them to patients, even if you enjoy a normal fit weight. Aerobics is a great method to lose weight exercise, but there are other benefits. Some of the benefits of aerobic exercise include strengthening the repertory muscles, enlarging the heart to pump more efficiently, increasing the flow of blood (and oxygen) in the body, and increasing endurance. Aerobics will decrease the risk of death due to cardiovascular problems and of osteoporosis in both men and women.

Regular aerobic exercise can assist an individual lead a fit and productive life. it’s a great tool employed in weight loss programs. Wherein, the heart and metabolic rate is increased by spreading the moderate levels of energy for longer period of time. This activity causes stored body fats to be triggered for production of energy. The aerobic exercise causes the glycogen stores in the muscles to be broken down. Once the glycogen stores and the fat reserves in the body are used this leads to weight loss. This aerobic type of physical exercise calls for body stamina. not muscle strength. The whole idea and purpose of these exercises is to improve the oxygen consumption of the body. The process is the use of oxygen in the metabolic or energy generating process.

With some effort, interest and research you will be able to learn how aerobics can change your life. There are a lot of great exercise programs you’ll be able to do. These include both solo activities and classes with groups. There’s aerobic equipment available to make the exercise program more interesting.

You should always talk with your doctor when starting an aerobic exercise program, or any other exercise program. Your doctor can help determine which exercises will work best for you and your body’s needs. An effective aerobics exercise program is the key to living a healthier and physically productive life. So please do not wait another day before starting a new healthy program that includes aerobics.

After 250 Years Congress Acknowledges Robert Burns Scots Poet For His Support For American Independence.

Saturday, August 29th, 2009 | Great Sites | Comments Off

Earlier this year the American House of Representatives passed a resolution recognising the close ties between the mutual inspiration between Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns and the Founding Fathers of America.

Congressman Mike McIntyre of North Carolina proposed and steered the resolution through the House of Representatives in February 2009. North Carolina is of course the US State where thousands of early Scottish settlers put down their roots and now boosts more people who pride themselves in their Scottish ancestry than there are Scots living in the whole of Scotland.

The Resolution also recognised that Robert Burns had truly inspired the Founding Fathers of America writing inspirational poems such as “Ode for General Washington’s Birthday” and “Ballard on the American War”.

“Scots Wha Hae”

Scots Wha Hae by Robert Burns was at one time regarded as the unofficial national anthem and is still a strong contender if Scotland gets its independence. It was strongly inspired by the American struggle for independence from the same English government.

Robert Burns was one of many who hoped that the American victory for independence would lead to similar revolutions right across Europe including of course the Scots claim for independence against the English rule.

President Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was one of many Americans who took part in Burns Night celebrations. Shortly before his election he not only attended but gave the famous immortal speech to remind every person there exactly why they are meeting to celebrate the birth and life of Robert Burns who was an inspiration to so many around the world. It is said by some that Abraham Lincoln attempted to give the address in the Scots accent with a mixed success given the difficulty of this even by those brought up in Scotland but having to speak the standard English for most of the day in our workplace communications.

RSMC Proclaims July Mold Awareness Month by Introducing the Guiding Values for Mold in addition to Moisture Control

Saturday, August 29th, 2009 | Great Sites | Comments Off

The Responsible Solutions to Mold Coalition, Chicago, has marked July as “Mold Awareness Month” by introducing a collection of 50 recommendations to manage moisture and for that reason mold in residential and commercial buildings. Termed the Guiding Principles for Mold and Moisture Control, it is accessible on the organization’s Web site, www.responsiblemoldsolutions.org, in an interactive set-up in which visitors can explore mold and wetness control steps by clicking on various parts of a typical house. black mold In addition, a complete list of the Guiding Principles can be downloaded. Also, RSMC has provided its top 10 list of moisture/mold control steps, listed below, in a questionnaire that can be printed and posted on job sites.  symptoms mold

“From its launch at the 2006 International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Fla., we have had one simple message,” said Mike Poellinger, RSMC chairman, “If you control moisture, you’ll control mold. We think this is a fitting way to mark the second anniversary of Mold Awareness Month by introducing our Guiding Principles, which stand for the best thinking on ways to keep moisture out of buildings previous to, during and after construction. An Internet seek out on mold will generate more than 20 million informational sites. Our goal is to cut through the vast body of information on mold—some exact, some not—and provide science-based uncomplicated-to-use information on mold and moisture control.”  mold solutions

The Guiding Principles are divided into 7 sections together with Construction/General; Design/Mechanical Issues; Interior Construction/Bathrooms & Kitchens; Construction/Exterior; Construction/Foundation; Maintenance; and Remediation.

Representative steps that can be taken to avoid moisture and mold invasion include the following:

• Ensure that moisture sensitive building supplies are not stored outside or exposed to weather before installation; if they are delivered to the job site wet, they should be rejected.

• Roofs ought to be designed to drain freely and allow water to move rapidly off roofs, through gutters and downspouts and away from the building.

• Use water-resistive barriers behind tub and shower tile installations so water permeating through tile grout drains back into the tub or shower pan—not into the wall cavity.

• Gypsum wallboard must be installed only when buildings are closed in from the weather.

• Before wallboard and other moisture sensitive interior components are installed in buildings that have been exposed to the weather, provision must be made to dry up the framing and substrate. This may be as uncomplicated as providing time and ventilation to allow for drying. Depending on the climate, mechanical drying and dehumidification equipment may be required to supplement ventilation drying.

• All windows, doors, roofs and chimneys need to have flashings installed around them. These flashings, which are not costly or time intensive to install, are significant in deflecting water away from a building.

• The ground around the building should be graded to uphold a slope of 5 percent that drains away from the building—this ought to be checked occasionally to make sure that settling or new landscaping doesn’t reverse the grade.

• Cover all earthen crawl spaces with waterproof plastic sheets. Do not store anything on top of the plastic sheeting as this can lead to damage that will allow water vapor to enter the crawlspace from the soil underneath.

• Avoid excessive internal humidity—run exhaust fans over stoves and in bathrooms for 10 minutes after use. Turn off heating system humidifiers in the spring.

• Watch for water stains or standing puddles in the basement, bathrooms or under kitchen sinks. Treat water leaks as you should a smoldering fire—eliminate the cause and dry up the water immediately.

“While there is deliberation within the building science community over some moisture control issues,” said Anton TenWolde, supervisory research physicist, U.S. Forest Products Laboratory (retired), and RSMC member, “Rather than entering the discussion, a more valuable role for RSMC is to identify and communicate generally agreed upon guidelines—vital and effective steps that architects, builders and homeowners can take now to keep wetness—and as a result mold—out of their buildings. If our recommendations are followed, we think that many moisture and mold problems can be eliminated.”

There have been many innovations in building materials over the past few years including the introduction of mold-resistant products. While many of these products are excellent, they should be viewed as a secondary protection against mold and moisture control. According to RSMC, mold-resistant products are no substitute for safe design, good building practices and ongoing maintenance. If repeatedly exposed to moisture, they will lose their integrity.

“In marking the second anniversary of RSMC’s Mold Awareness Month, we propose some very simple advice in how to deal with mold and moisture control issues,” said Frank Nunes, RSMC vice chairman and executive director, International Institute for Lath and Plaster and Lath and Plaster Institute of Northern California. “If you’re having mold and dampness issues in your home or building—reveal where the water is coming from (and stop it) and find out everyplace the water goes. Simply replacing moldy wallboard, for example, is not the answer—you need to find out the source of the water intrusion, fix it, and follow the trail of the water to find out if it’s done destruction to areas out of sight.”

Organic Baby Clothing Buyers Guide

Friday, August 28th, 2009 | Great Sites | Comments Off

If you are expecting or have just delivered a baby, congratulations! As parents if you are looking to influence your child’s view of the world by choosing an organic lifestyle, we commend you! One of first new things you will need to buy is organic baby clothes.

Buying organic cotton baby clothing has many advantages. Because they are made without chemicals and pesticides, the chances that baby will suffer from rashes or skin conditions are slender. Non organic cotton can contain synthetic chemicals and fertilizers. This is practiced all over the world. Exposure to such toxic chemicals in children can lead to side effects including difficulty breathing, asthma, and vision problems. Now just imagine buying such clothes for your little one. Most of these chemicals are so strong that they can easily be absorbed into baby’s fragile skin. Now please understand, the cotton is not the problem, but the chemicals which are used to produce cotton. Buying organic baby clothing will reduce the risk significantly of baby developing a skin rash and allergies. You will also be helping protect the environment. The USDA has established stringent guidelines for certifying cotton organic. Farm inspections are necessary to make sure all organic guidelines for cotton production are obeyed and followed.

Organic Cotton Baby Clothes come in many styles and designs. From tops and body suits to mittens, pants and jackets, organic baby clothes have come along way with many companies designing many lines. In fact there may be only a 10% price increase in quality organic clothing over its non organic counterpart. Spending a few dollars more for baby’s health is something most parents will do without seriously affecting their budget.

Look for the right insurance quote via online form

Friday, August 28th, 2009 | Great Sites | Comments Off

The assurance market is vague to most people. There are many insurance offerers. As a private person you can hardly get the overview. Nevertheless one wants to obtain the suitable solution. Nowadays it is a good idea to use a price comparison site as Preiswerte Riester Rente, when you are in need of a particular assurance. There you can get the right insurance quote from a great number of insurance providers.

Some important German assurances - for example Vergleich Krankenzusatzversicherung - which are mentioned in this context are:

The dog owner assurance: Without a dog liability assurance every dog owner carries a very high risk of liability when his four-legged friend once causes a damage. When the dog runs over the street and causes a traffic accident, one can be held responsible for all damages of persons and vehicles. On the German assurance market there are many dog assurance suppliers. As a dog owner it is quite hard to find the best company and contract for your specific requirements. The research for the right assurance can be done via Internet. There are recommendable web pages which offer cost-free comparisons of German dog owner assurances.

The house insurance: For a lot of owners the own house is the largest investment in their life. Hazards such as fire, water or storm can cause immense damages or even a total loss. Therefore a property insurance is essential for every homeowner. The household effects are not insured. This should be done by a separate household inventory assurance. The elements of fire insurance and tap water assurance should always be included. Natural hazards might be a great risk for your home. So everybody should search a home insurance which includes these special risks. Assurance protection against storm damage should definitely be considered because of the rise of heavy storms during the past years in Germany.

The private sickness assurance: Private sickness assurance can be taken by entrepreneurs - regardless of their salaries. As an employee you may switch to the private health insurance, if your yearly gross salary lies 3 years in a row over the insurance limit of 48,150 Euros (equivalent to 4012.50 Euros a month, status of 2008). Also officials, judges and members of parliament are usually privately insured. The German private medical assurance usually offers superior performance than the statutory health insurance. Many assurance vendors give the option of making modulation to the tariff of the active agreement.

The vocational disability assurance: Consumer protectors have repeatedly pointed out that the occupational disablement assurance in addition to the casualty insurance is the most important insurance actually. The loss of manpower is an existential risk. Because of being no longer able to work means to earn nothing. Physical hardship often is the result. The state barely helps in such a case - the statutory pension assurance pays only a minimal disability pension for all people born up from the year 1961. The reason for the predominant number of occupational inability cases is disease. Less common cause than illness is a previous accident. About every 4th worker and every 5th employee must terminate their jobs for health reasons before the time and must go into early retirement. When the claims for sickness benefits paid by the medical assurance and for unemployment benefits are exhausted, you are confronted with a large income gap when not having an vocational invalidity insurance.

The automobile liability assurance: If you get a car for yourself, you have to insure it. The car liability assurance is required by law - without proof of casualty assurance already the admission of the car is impossible. The car casualty insurance helps whenever you culpably cause a damage to another road user. Fully comprehensive cover or part insurance cover can voluntarily be contracted. Hull assurances pay for damages of your own vehicle.

The German Riester-Pension: The so called Riester-Insurance is a government-funded private pension you can seize to close your personal pension gap. It is both safe and attractive: During the active working life, you pay contributions into a private annuity contract, a bank or savings fund, additionally you get growing state allowances and tax concessions as a bonus. Later you will receive monthly benefits a lifetime - in the form of a retirement pay or a payment plan. Each employed professional, who is not willing to rely on the national pension solely, should take into consideration a Riester-Assurance plan. Also officials, judges and soldiers belong to the circle of beneficiaries of public aid for Riester-Pension plans.

The above mentioned assurances and several more can be found at comparison sites on the Internet, such as: BU Berufsunfaehigkeitsversicherung Vergleich. This comparison website is independent from a single assurance provider and gives a good overview of the market.

Background on Vinyl Siding

Friday, August 28th, 2009 | Great Sites | Comments Off

In the 1960’s vinyl siding was introduced for exterior cladding for homes and other structures. Steady growth occurred over the following decades because of its durability and easy maintenance. Vinyl siding is manufactured primarily with PVC and today is the number one choice for exterior cladding in the US and Canada. It is favored 2 to 1 over all other sidings.

The construction industry and homeowners use siding with vinyl primarily because it provides many advantages including the lowest installed cost of any siding material. Other favorable factors include a variety of design profiles, durability and a broad range of colors.

For design variation, vinyl siding is an ideal material. Design selections include a variety of colors and finishes. Designs include clapboard, dutchlap, beaded, board and batten, shakes, shingles, and scallops among others. Various textures are also available including woodgrain, smooth, rough-hewn cedar shakes, etc.

Any look can be achieved with vinyl siding and it never needs paint. The only maintenance needed is a simple wash to keep it looking great. From a remodeling standpoint, homeowners are likely to recoup 83% of the cost of installation.

The cost of vinyl siding is relatively cheap compared to its alternatives. Suppliers though sell the same brand for different prices. Costs can range from $4 to $12 US, per square foot – excluding applicable sales tax. Adding to vinyl siding cost is the cost of installation.

Though you can install vinyl siding on your own, you should be pretty handy with carpentry. For hiring a contractor, the rate usually starts at $1.60 per square foot of wall area. And more seasoned contractors could charge more.

Vinyl siding cost a lot less to maintain than other siding material. You just need a garden hose, scrub bucket, and liquid soap. You can just spend one afternoon scrubbing your vinyl wall and it will look brand new.

There are perceived disadvantages to vinyl siding. Though it is considered safe when installed on a house, there are concerns that the PVC manufacturing process and disposal of old vinyl siding may cause disease for those involved in that process. Another concern is that vinyl siding on older homes may detract or diminish their historical value. Some still consider it to be “tacky” compared to other traditional cladding. On the other hand, new designs make it difficult to see much difference between vinyl and original wood or other siding.

If you decide to use vinyl siding, perhaps the single biggest factor is to choose a high quality product. Cheaper grades do not show as well, are not as durable and can be easily damaged in high winds and bad weather. Also, be sure and shop around. Get at least 2 bids or more from reputable contractors before you make a final decision.

Night Sweats and You

Thursday, August 27th, 2009 | Great Sites | Comments Off

Numerous medical troubles add tension to your life, and abnormal hidrosis is one of those problems. Whether you endure excessive perspiration in interpersonal situations or wet sheets late at night, sweating more than you should can truly put a damper on your ability to just relax and get through the day… or get through the night.

If you find you’re sweating every single night, you should really do something about it. Not only could it be the symptom of something you should have addressed by a doctor, but it will affect your quality of sleep and make it more difficult for you to function in your day-to-day life. If you’re a woman, of course you’ll have to consider whether it could be night sweats and hot flashes.

It can even be expensive as you start to require more clothing or more bedding or at the very least you end up doing more laundry.

Your doctor will likely question if you’ve experienced in any diet changes or lifestyle changes. To help him pinpoint your problem, I suggest you keep a journal of your activities and diet. Sometimes it can be really difficult to pinpoint a specific food which might be triggering your night sweats. The pattern in your diet which reveals the food item causing your problems may require looking over weeks of data.

Do not avoid the medical possibility just because your are a man. There are male night sweats which can resemble the night sweats women experience with menopause.

You might also monitor yourself for other symptoms. Do you have any pain or discomfort that you have only begun to experience recently? Any kind of changes — not just pains but changes — in the way you feel might provide some lateral way for your physician to pinpoint what is causing you such discomfort at night. The causes of excessive perspiration can be difficult to identify so start taking data now.

Regardless of whether it is a medical issue or a food issue, you simply must address your night sweating. There are many ways you can try curb it, with special pillows, pijamas and even matteresses to help you stay cool in the heat of the night.

DISCLAIMER: I hope this helps, but note that I am not a medical professional so you must consult with a medical doctor before taking any medical advice from the online world.

Three Ways Dads Can Encourage Piano Playing in Kids

Thursday, August 27th, 2009 | Great Sites | Comments Off

It’s an undisputable fact of life: kids learn by example. Both positive and negative behaviors are often learned and reinforced by a parent’s example. What better way to teach your child a skill, like piano playing, than by demonstrating it?

Dads have an extra important role to play when motivating kids to learn music. Children who are regularly exposed to music in the home are more likely to grow up musical. Kids with parents who actually play an instrument (like piano) have an even further edge.

Dad’s role is especially important when it comes to raising a budding pianist. Young children in particular look to their fathers as role models. They see Dad as omniscient, Herculean and heroic. Kids are natural imitators and will readily and willingly engage in an activity that Dad portrays as cool or fun.

Mothers, of course, can play a significant role in helping kids get excited about piano playing. The downside of having a mother who is musical when Dad isn’t is that it can send mixed messages. Children may view piano playing as a “girl” activity, at least at home.

Motivating a child to practice regularly is a chore at the best of times. Children are often even less excited about practicing when they know that their parents don’t play. It’s tough for kids to see the value in a musical education under these circumstances.

Dads can make a difference in the musical education of their children even if they’ve never played piano before. It’s never too late to learn something new. You might not become a virtuoso, but that’s not the point. The point is to show your child that piano playing is a valuable life skill.

Dads who haven’t previously taken piano lessons can get started by doing one or more of the following:

* Taking a parent/child piano class. Some music schools offer parent/child piano lessons. Many are actually founded on the philosophy that children learn best through active parent participation. Parent/child classes teach basic musical skills but also foster healthy interaction between parent and child. Plus, dads who never took piano lessons get to learn right along with their children.

* Take a self-tutorial. Piano tutorials are available in workbook and DVD form as well as online. Tutorials are self-directed and cover the basics like note reading and chords. Online tutorials sometimes have the added advantage of access to an online mentor. Self tutorials range in price. Many are free. Most courses cost between $25 and $100 for basic foundational skills. A dad can at least learn enough this way to understand what his child is learning. He may even be able to learn from his child.

* Take formal piano lessons. Remember, it’s not too late to learn. You don’t have to take classical piano either if that’s not your forte. Find an instructor who understands what your goal is: to lead your child by example. Your instructor can design a lesson plan that helps meet those needs without scaring you with long-winded classical pieces. He or she can teach you the basics and give you a great foundation for piano playing for and with your child.

Dads who master the basics of piano playing have another advantage that non-musical dads don’t. Pianist fathers have one more way to encourage kids to turn off the television and engage in something productive and beneficial. Impromptu family concerts, father/child duets or simply making up goofy songs together fosters relaxation, bonding and emotional health.
