What Do Plumbers Do?

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009 | Great Sites | Comments Off

Most people seem to think that plumbers fix faucets, clear clogged drains, fix toilets, and install plumbing fixtures. Or maybe that was what I thought 19 years ago before sitting down for an interview as an apprentice plumber. Lucky for me I got the job, but then my eyes were opened. The first week I learned about everything from plumbers putty to steam traps. Then we installed a faucet, toilet and even an 80 gallon natural gas water heater. I worked at this job for about a year and a half before looking for something more then just service plumbing.

I then got a job working as a commercial plumber. We did all of the plumbing for new construction commercial jobs like restaurants, areanas, dental offices, and even a school. In this time I learned so much about plumbing, gas fitting, and hot water heating that it was almost overwhelming.

About five years after this, and now a fully qualified journeyman plumber and gas fitter, I went into business for myself. Again my world was expanded. Not long after starting for myself I took on a couple of houses that required the plumbing and gas fitting to be installed. Residential plumbing is very much different from commercial plumbing. At first I made next to nothing, but I eventually got the hang of this type of plumbing and everything worked out fine.

Next was when high effiecient boilers came onto the market and I took on a couple of projects. I had worked with boilers before, but this was different. Not just because of the boiler, but because the installation was not normal. In fact as far as my heating wholesaler knew I was the first plumber in my city to do an installation like this one. Then another project came on and we did the same sort of installation, except now we removed the furnace and hooked up fan coil in its place. This became a very high energy effiecient system.

Then came along tankless water heaters. The type of tankless water heater that I installed required you to have a certification prior to buying and installing any of these. I got this new ticket and installed one system. I found these worked great for infloor heat but not so great for domestic water. Unless you have a smaller family or for use in a cabin. Otherwise you should install two or more of these units in series.

Still to this day I find I that the world of plumbing keeps expanding. I hope this article has helped you to see what plumbers do.

The Evolution of Swimwear

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 | Great Sites | Comments Off

Introduction

Swimwear is the term used for garments designated for swimming and beach wear. It has gradually changed over the years from the bulky garments used to completely cover the body into the selection of brief pieces of fabric arranged to expose as much as possible of the body.

Finding the right sort of swimwear is not always that easy especially if you do not have a large budget. There is an enormous variety of body sizes and shapes for both men and women and correspondingly there are an enormous variety of outfits ranging from the very cheap to the very expensive.

Fashion Dictates

If it was just a case of having a bathing costume to wear when going swimming and replacing it when it had worn out, life would be relatively easy. But there is the matter of fashion. Every year the makers come up with a different style so that the previous year’s model suddenly looks old fashioned and we feel compelled to buy a new one. As purchasers we are confronted with one piece swimsuits, two piece swimwear, some with long tops, some with skimpy tops, high leg cut, high waist cut, different cup sizes, in a variety of fabrics, colours, patterns, two tone and so on. The choice is endless.

History of Swimwear

The earliest recorded bathing costume was in 350 BC in Greece which was a toga-like garment for bathing. During the 18th century people visited spa resorts for their health where they spent time in the spa waters. Naturally they needed something suitable to wear, other than their day clothes, when they were engaged in public bathing. Later the recreation of beach bathing demanded a specially made outfit to maintain decorum and decency, so the bathing suit was developed.

Initially the swimwear was rather like ordinary daywear, and the dresses worn by the women sometimes had lead weights sewn into the hems to prevent the skirts from floating up. As the expansion of the railways enabled the masses to spend time at the seaside a more practical type of outfit was required. By the early 1900’s the swimsuit consisted of bloomers with black stocking and shoes, and the top was like a jacket belted at the waist. Swimming was considered suitable for men, while women were assisted into the water for a short dip.

Over the century attitudes changed and swimming became an Olympic sport for both men and women. Gradually the swimming costume changed to adopt short capped sleeves and more ankle was exposed beneath the bloomers. As women became more active in the water the swimming costume needed to be less cumbersome so the neckline was lowered and the tops became sleeveless. Eventually the Princess cut was introduced which consisted of the trousers attached to a blouse in one piece.

In 1909 Annette Kellerman, the Australian swimmer, film star and author, was considered to be the first woman to wear swimwear consisting of only one piece resulting in her arrest for indecency! However, by 1910 “Annette Kellermans” became the new accepted ladies swimwear.

From then on the swimsuits became lighter and briefer. By the 1920’s the women wore figure hugging tank suits made from wool Jersey and by 1928 they had evolved into the swimsuit we would recognise today. In the 1930’s cotton was introduced for bathing suits sometimes with little overskirts to hide bulky thighs, but film stars wore fashionable figure hugging costumes with higher cut legs sealing the fate of the fashionable swimwear.

The corset manufacturers in the 1940’s saw that women with less than perfect figures needed swimsuits to hide or control the bulges, so seeing a gap in the market they produced costumes which had control panels for the tummy and bra cups and bones to give support to the bust. Using the techniques applied in corset making they introduced the stretch factor to bathing costumes so that they were more flattering than ever before.

With the development of synthetic fabrics, Nylon and Lycra became the fabric of choice for swimwear because of their stretch properties. This meant that the costume could be pulled on without openings or fastenings and gave a firmer cleaner line to the figure. Women continued to wear all in one swimsuits until the 1950’s when the bikini became popular.

Leisure Swimming or Sunbathing

Although certain costumes are called swimwear, in fact some never get near the water. They are solely for sunbathing which usually means they are as small as possible, just barely covering the essential bits so that the skin gets maximum exposure to the sun and such a design would be classed as a bikini.

Two Piece or Bikinis

Over two thousand years ago early mosaics and pottery from Greece show what in fact looks like an early version of a bikini. These garments were used by women performers and acrobats and were in two pieces to cover the breasts and the lower part of the body, much like the current style of Bandeau tops. Modern day runners and athletes wear something very similar when competing. Paula Radcliffe when running the Marathon last year, wore a garment almost identical to those worn thousands of years ago!!

The bikini resembles women’s underwear and has been described as a scanty two piece bathing suit. The lower part may be two small triangles attached together with a string tie at either side, or even a thong. The upper part may also be two small triangles attached together with a string tie but arranged in a slightly different order. Louis Reard patented the new version of the bikini in 1946; his design was similar to the skimpy string 1970’s bikini and it shocked the world when it appeared on French beaches in 1947.

The very first bikini shown in the cinema was in the Bond film Dr No when Ursula Andress rises out of the sea in a white bikini. This created the iconic Bond girl and made her world famous. When being interviewed on television recently she revealed that the bikini had been constructed out of a bra covered with the fabric to give her the required lift of the bosom. This actual bikini sold at auction for £35,000 in 2001.

As the fashion for having an all over tan peaked in the 1980’s and 1990’s designs of bikinis reduced in size considerably.

Ultimately the top part of the bikini was abandoned altogether when topless sunbathing became the norm in some countries and the bottom was just a G-string or thong also called a Tanga. Oliver Saillard the fashion journalist states that the bikini is the most popular female beachwear in the world, and that the emancipation of swimwear is linked to the emancipation of women.

In the 1950’s there was a popular song entitled ‘In My little Itsy Bitsy Yellow Polka Dot Bikini’ that indicated the acceptance of the new style of swimwear. I remember my cousin persuading me to try on a bikini and I felt very exposed but she said how incredible I looked in it because I was so slim.

Although the bikini is now an acceptable garment whatever the size, the one piece swimsuit is still the best for serious swimmers. Some firms are well known for their skill at making swimwear and make all the garments for the Olympic team and other swimming competitions. Now swimwear is available in a wide range of bust sizes and the more expensive makes have control panels for the stomach combined with clever styling to create a good silhouette. Combined with a matching sarong, older ladies may feel more comfortable when walking around the beach area.

Helen Mirren was photographed on holiday in her substantial bikini last summer with the caption commenting on how good she looked for her age and that particular bikini was snapped up from the stores within days. Perhaps the purchasers believed that they could look as good as Helen Mirren in a bikini if they had the same one.

Leg Line

Some two piece bathing suits are cut so that the waist is high and the matching leg line is also cut high. I believe the aim is to make the wearer look as though her legs are much longer than they are. However if you have less than the perfect shape for this style it can emphasise large hips so it’s not for all women.

Another fashion style is the tankini where the bottoms look like little shorts and shows the lower curve of the bottom, which is fine if you are young with a nice pert bottom.

The classic bikini style is still as popular as ever though, with the cut of the leg line following the natural crease between the leg and the hip.

The most recent development in fabric is the ‘tan through’ swimwear. This allows the body to tan without exposing the body to the world. Some commentators on this style point to the effects of too much sun on the body and the prevalence of skin cancer of which the evidence indicates an alarming increase. However, the counter argument to that is if you are wearing a bikini anyway then the extra exposure to the sun through the top and bottom garments is hardly going to make much difference.

Conclusion

Swimwear is a term used these days to cover all types of beach wear and swimming gear. It is a bit of a misnomer in that many outfits never see the water and are not used for swimming. However there is a huge range of garments available for the purchaser of different styles, sizes and fabrics. The one commonality of course is that everyone wants to look good once they don these garments. The main key to that is to make sure your new swimwear is the right fit and cut, for your body size and shape.

The importance of being properly measured for your swimwear is often overlooked but it is as important as being properly measured for your bra or other underwear, particularly if you do indeed intend to actually swim in your new swimwear! By wearing the right size and style swimwear for your body, will ensure you are really comfortable in it on the beach, in the pool or wherever else you choose to wear it.

SEO And Hosting Provider Web-Asylum.com Behind New Holiday Franchise

Sunday, April 26th, 2009 | Great Sites | Comments Off

The highly successful Search Engine Optimisation and web hosting provider Web-Asylum is helping the owners of the RentInNerja.com to ensure their online vacation booking web sites become a major presence in the niche holiday market industry and achieve their goal at rivalling web sites like Holiday Lettings for product awareness and market share within the next three years.

The owner of the RentIn Group, who initially purchased his first holiday property in Spain with a view to renting it out when he wasn’t using it himself, states that after looking at many rental service providers locally in Spain as well as web site service providers he was left a little frustrated that none of them seemed to be really customer focused and the online services all seemed difficult to navigate or lacking important features.

That’s when he decided to pay for a website to be created with the features he felt he needed as a property owner to enable him to manage the promotion and bookings efficiently for his and also collegues apartments and villas around the area of Nerja, Spain.

The initial developers of the site were not Search Engine Optimisers, and although they managed to build the site to the requirements of RentIn - they could only manage to get the site RentIn-Nerja.com to the top of Google for search terms specifically related to Rent Nerja !!

Relying on Adwords alone for wider search phrases used by the public was an expensive way to go, and although the business was growing… it was obvious that the cost per sale needed to be lowered for the RentIn group to grow healthily.

At this point the owner of RentIn was introduced to Martin Sansone and the services of Web-Asylum.com who have had numerous SEO sucesses for clients in competitive markets with an array of technology services and 20+ years of creative marketing experience - tailored to the individual client needs in their trade sector.

After careful research of the apartment rental market by Web-Asylum, Martin saw the potential growth available to RentIn and recommended significant changes in the approach of the original RentInNerja.com site and quickly pushed the web site up onto page one of Google’s results page for in excess of 20 search terms. RentIn saw a huge improvement in their bottom line.

As a result agreements have been put in place to have Web-Asylum.com work closely with RentIn to ensure the continual development of the brand and mass role out of their business model initially across Spain as profitable franchises with a focus on ensuring each franchisee can enjoy a very comfortable lifestyle and income.

With the testing and completion of totally new systems for the RentIn-Marbella.com site. Web-Asylum is now providing all of the groups web hosting needs around the world and have already got orders to promote the next two totally new areas for apartment rentals in Javea as well as a Mijas apartments site both in the Costa Del Sol region of Spain. Easily reached by holiday makers from the Andalucian Malaga Airport.

The Pritikin Principle

Sunday, April 26th, 2009 | Great Sites | Comments Off

With so many diets out there today, the search for the right one can be frustrating. For this reason, doing some research on diets before you get involved is an excellent idea. Why? Well, because you can learn all the basics, as well as the pros and cons, before you even start on the diet. One diet out there that many people have heard of and tried is Pritikin Principle dieting plan. Not sure whether or not this could be the right diet for you? Well, let’s take a closer look at the diet to figure out whether or not it will really work well for you.

Overview of the Pritikin Principle

The Pritikin Principle Diet is one that was developed by Nathan Pritikin and it has been around for more than 30 years now. This is a diet that is very low fat, and while is mostly based on eating vegetables, fruits, and grains, it is not totally a vegetarian diet. Only 10% of this diet is fat. Nathan’s son, Robert, has now taken over this concept and has added to it and tweaked it just a bit. He stresses that you should choose foods that have low calories for their density and then you should fill up on them, since you’ll feel really full but won’t be consuming as many calories.

People It Works For Best

This diet is one that is a great fit for those who want to change their entire eating habits to lose some weight over time slowly. Also those who want to start using vegetarian principles in their diet will find that this is a great diet to check out as well. Instead of just being a diet, it focuses on becoming an entire lifestyle, so it is great for people who want an entire change of life. However, those who love their meats and sweets from time to time may not find this diet to be the right fit.

Pros and Cons to Consider

As with any diet, Pritikin Principle diet has both pros and cons that you should take into consideration. Here are a few of the most common pros and cons that you may want to think about before you decide this is the right diet for you.

- Pro #1 - Focuses on Healthy Eating - One of the key pros of the Pritkin Principle Diet is that it really focuses on healthy eating. The foods allowed in the diet are foods that are full of great vitamins and minerals, so you really get the important nutrients that help to keep your body healthy. Also, the foods that you eat make you feel full as well, which means you don’t constantly have to deal with cravings.

- Pro #2 - Allows a Variety of Foods - There are a variety of different foods that you are allowed to eat as well. This makes it a better diet than some diets that are extremely restrictive. When you have a variety of foods to eat, you are less likely to get bored.

- Pro #3 - Starch is Allowed in Moderation - While there are some diets that totally get rid of carbs, this diet allows you to have some carbs as long as it is done in moderation. This is a healthier choice than just totally getting rid of the carbohydrates in your diet.

- Pro #4 - Doesn’t Go Crazy with Excessive Calorie Counting - You really don’t have to stress about excessively having to count the calories that you eat. It can be a pain to count every calorie, but with this diet you’ll know that the foods you are eating are low calorie.

- Con #1 - Large Amounts of High Fiber Foods - One of the main cons to this diet is that you eat many foods that are high in fiber, since it helps to make you feel full and improve the way the digestive system works. However, over time this can cause swelling and bloating and you may not be able to eat enough in one meal to feel satisfied.

- Con #2 - No Cheat Days Available - Many people find that the fact there are no cheat days to this diet to be a huge con. So, some people may find that this diet is really hard to stick to all the time, since they don’t get some of their favorite foods.

- Con #3 - Not Enough Healthy Fats - This is a diet that is low in fat, and it can be a con since you may not be getting the healthy fats that your body really does need to be healthy.

Food Do’s and Don’ts

The foods that are supposed to be eaten on Pritikin Principle diet include foods that have very few calories per pound. So, you are to avoid foods that have high calorie content and stick to grains, fruits, and vegetables that allow you to eat large quantities for relatively few calories. Doing this allows you to fill your stomach so you won’t feel hungry and consume high calorie foods. Some of the foods that are really preferred in the diet include oats, brown rice, apples, squash, onions, millet, potatoes, barley, bananas, pears, beans, dark green lettuces, and strawberries.

Opinions from the Medical Community

While the medical community tends to be quite happy about all the nutrients that you’ll be getting from the diet, the one problem that they have is that the fat in the diet is extremely low and may be a problem for your health. Fat soluble vitamins are also limited in this diet as well. This means that you may have problems with skin health, proper growth, and normal cell functions because you are not getting enough fat in the diet.

Disclaimer: Always consult your doctor before starting a diet program.

Do Doctors Prescribe Diabetes Medicine Too Soon?

Sunday, April 26th, 2009 | Great Sites | Comments Off

Every day more than four thousand people in America are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. More information about diabetes can be found at sugar diabetes. This medical condition is a growing problem in the western world. Over thirty per cent of type 2 diabetics are prescribed diabetes medicine within one month of their initial diagnosis. The purpose of the diabetes medicine is to regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating the pancreas to produce insulin, slow down starch absorption and limiting glucose production in the liver.

When reviewing current medical practices the question was raised, do doctors prescribe diabetes medicine too quickly to Type 2 diabetics? It is generally thought that the increase in obesity goes hand in hand with the increase of Type 2 diabetes. Losing weight, develop healthy eating habits, and starting to take some form of exercise are seen as the first steps in fighting type 2 diabetes.

It is when a patient is first told that they have type 2 diabetes, they are more inclined and hopefully motivated to try and remedy the state of their health, by making changes to their lifestyle through diet and starting a fitness program. One opinion is that if doctors prescribe diabetes medicine to control blood sugar at the time of the first diagnosis, then the patient will not have any incentive to persevere with the lifestyle changes needed.

Unfortunately, there are numerous Type 2 diabetics who do not appreciate that controlling their medical condition through lifestyle changes is far more beneficial for them than taking diabetes medicine. Many will think that if they can just take a pill instead of losing weight, eating a balanced diet and getting fit, then why not take the easy option. If type 2 diabetics are given diabetes medicine they may assume their condition is purely a medical and not a lifestyle related problem.

If the condition has not progressed too far then improving your diet and regular exercise should always be the first recommendation for newly diagnosed type 2 diabetics. However, we must not forget that diabetes medicine, and ultimately insulin, is crucial for controlling severe type 2 diabetes conditions.

Diabetes is closely associated with high blood pressure and more information can be found at high blood pressure symptoms.
